Q: A lot of my friends are experimenting with their sexualities right now. I have a general question. What is it like dating someone of the same sex? How does it compare with dating a guy? Any advice for awkward teens in this possible phase? —Roma
This is one of the best descriptions I’ve ever read about the differences between dating girls and guys.
People in fandoms take apart stories more than English teachers.
English Teacher:The curtains were blue to show the depressing feelings the character was feeling.
Writer:The curtains were blue because I like blue curtains...
Fandom:The curtains were blue because they reminded him of the blue trench coat his best friend used to wear. Because truly, deep down in his heart, he loved that man more than a best friend. He loved him and he completed him. Now that he's gone, all he has to remember him by is those blue curtains.
“I’m less concerned that you love my characters than that you recognise them. Human beings have rough edges. Authors who write exclusively about ethical, admirable, likeable characters are not writing about real people.”—
Excellent piece by Lionel Shriver in defense of unlikable characters.
*nods, nods* If you don’t believe, why should you care? And characters also need to be imperfect because RELATIONSHIPS - think of not just romance but friends and family: everyone whose jagged edges fit up against yours like puzzle pieces. How would one invest in a relationship about perfect people? … That is what I think anyway!
Welcome to my tumblr! I created this to record my progress in writing my next novel. Every day that I work on this book, I’ll post something here under the tag #Writing the Sequel. It may or may not be related to the book itself, but I will make sure to not post anything that is super-spoilery, because it’s a sequel to Adaptation (which doesn’t come out till Fall 2012). I decided to do this because people often ask me how long it takes to write a book, and while I have a general idea, I’ve never kept track of the actual number of days or hours I spend working on a novel. I thought that tumblr would be a cool way to do that.
I don’t plan to post lengthy blog posts or news here, although after using Tumblr for only a couple of weeks I seem to reblog plenty of Buffy screencaps and other fannish things. If you’re interested in lengthier posts, please check out my website, www.malindalo.com. For really short updates and general procrastinatory conversations, follow me on Twitter.
